Editing Your Web Site

Yes you can edit your website all by yourself. To do this you will need a few things. First you will need the FTP username and password for your website. (If your website is hosted by Creative Web Designing please request this information via email) Then you will need a way to edit your website. If you do not like dealing with HTML or other programming formats then you will need a WYSIWYG software. There are many kinds of software that you can choose to use. One kind that we recommend is Adobe Contribute. However, any kind of software will work just fine. If you need help setting up the software please choose the topic below for help.

Adobe Contribute

Please follow the steps below to setup Contribute on your computer.

  1. Edit
  2. My Connections
  3. Click on New then Next
  4. Enter your name and email address then click next
  5. Type in your URL example: http://yourdomainname.com then click next
  6. Now select FTP
  7. FTP server is your domain name
  8. FTP login is your domain name
  9. Type in your account password that we gave you then click next
  10. Select your user group then click next and done.

How to make a new page using Contribute.

  1. Open contribute and go to your website.
  2. Once you are on the site go to any page other then the Home page.
  3. Now click on the New Page button at the top and then select Copy of Current Page.
  4. Enter the name of the new page in  the Page title box and then click OK.
  5. Once you have done that delete anything you do not want on this new page and add any new information. Once you are done click Publish at the top left.
  6. Once this is done you will need to link it to your website. You can find instructions on how to link pages in contribute under the How Do I....

Unable to access remote file

Corrupt file on your computer may be causing this. Please do the following and see if this fixes your problem.

  1. Close Contribute.
  2. Using a FTP program go to your website and under the public folder delete any files that end with .lck (If you need a FTP program you can get a free one at: http://filezilla-project.org/ If you do not know how to do this please call support at: 1-866-245-5154 and ask them to do this for you. Make sure to have your URL and account password ready.)
  3. *Go to the following location on your computer and delete all the files in the Contribute folder C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Macromedia or Adobe\Contribute (If you do not see any of these folders do the following. Select tools at the top right of your window screen and then click on Folder Option. Next click on the View tab. Look for Hidden Files and folders and select Show hidden files and folders)
  4. Now re-open Contribute and try to edit the site again.

*If you are using Macromedia Contribute then the folder would be named Macromedia. If you are using Adobe then the folder would be named Adobe. Adobe bought out Macromedia.

MS Frontpage:

Please follow the steps below to setup MS Frontpage on your computer.

  1. You will first need to create a folder on your computer for downloading your website. You can name this folder anything you would like. Most people name it after their website for example yourwebsite.com

  2. Now you will need to open MS Frontpage and select file from the top right menu and choose open web.

  3. Next you will need to browse to where you created that folder for downloading your website. Once you find this click on it and then click on the open button. Now you should be able to see everything in that folder on the left hand side.

  4. You next will need to download the site to your computer. Select file from the top right menu again.

  5. Now choose Publish Web and you should see a new window pop up. Here you will need to input your FTP info.

  6. Type your URL under "Enter publish destination" example: ftp://cwdesigning.com/cwdesigning.com or ftp://cwdesigning.com/public_html

(Depending on which control panel your web host offers, your remote files will be stored in a specific directory. For example, if using cPanel, your files are in public_html. If using Plesk, your files will be in httpdocs. If you are unsure about this please contact your hosting company.)

  7. Next you will need to input your Username and password.

  8. Now expand the window to show both local and remote files. You can do this by clicking on the button to the lower right hand side that says: show.

  9. Your local files on your computer will be in the left pane. The remote files on the server are listed in the right pane.

  10. You will first need to download your website to your computer. To do this click anywhere in the white area in the right pane. Then push down the Ctrl+A key on your keyboard. This will select all the files in the right pane on the server.

  11. Now using your mouse drag and drop the files into the left pane on your computer. (This may take some time to download.)

  12. Once this is done you can open any page from the Folder List and edit this page.

  13. When you are done editing this page you will need to save it and then publish the changes. Again select file from the top right menu.

  14. Then choose Publish Web.

  15. On the left pane you will see a green check next to the file or files that you just edited. this means that it needs to be published. You can drag and drop this or just click on the Publish button on the button. This will publish the whole website.
